WINTER TYRES - ARE YOU READY??
It is now getting to that time of the year, the temperature has dropped and the frosts have started. With the British weather being so unpredictable and temperatures averaging 7 degrees Celsius or lower for this time of year it is essential that you as a motorist are prepared.
Most people think that winter tyres are only for snow, this is not totally true.
Cars in the UK normally run on 'Summer Tyres' which in general relies on heat to perform, but when temperatures drop to 7*C or below these tyres will NOT perform to their full ability. The rubber compound hardens, leaving the vehicle with less grip, longer stopping distance given you less control and effectively making your car more hazardous to you and other road users.
Fitting winter tyres to your car during the colder months are safer as they contain more natural rubber and have a higher silica content, enabling the tyre to maintain greater flexibility in lower temperatures. They also have ‘sipes' - or tiny grooves in the tread of the tyre - which mean the tread can move around and generate more heat which then improves grip. For this reason, it's wise to fit winter tyres as soon as the temperature outside gets into single digits.
A lot of European countries have now made it law to put winter tyres on over their winter period. Ask yourself would they do this if it did not make a difference.
Remember having winter tyres also extends the length of time before needing to change your summer tyres!!!
The winter tyres can possibly last up to 4 winter’s dependent on the conditions and mileage driven.
